How to check live train status online

Checking live train status used to mean phoning the station or squinting at a flickering platform display. Today, real-time train tracking is available to anyone with a browser. To check a train's running status on Ekzora, open the Live Running Status tab, type the five-digit train number (for example 12951 for the Mumbai Rajdhani) and select your journey date. Ekzora then draws a live timeline showing every scheduled halt.

The timeline uses colour and animation to make the position obvious at a glance: stations the train has already departed are marked in green, the current location pulses in the brand colour, and upcoming halts are shown in a neutral tone with their expected arrival. Alongside the timeline you'll see the delay status — either "On Time" or "Late by X minutes" — plus distance covered and the next halt. This is the fastest way to know whether to leave for the station now or relax with another cup of chai.

Pro tip: for long-distance trains, check the running status a few hours before departure and again mid-journey. Delays often build up (or recover) at major junctions like Kanpur Central, Nagpur and Vijayawada, so an early-morning check gives the best picture of your actual arrival time.

Understanding PNR status live

The PNR (Passenger Name Record) is a unique 10-digit number printed on the top-left of every reserved Indian Railways ticket. It links all passengers travelling on that booking and holds the current reservation status. Checking your PNR status live tells you whether your seat is confirmed, on RAC, or still waitlisted.

• CNF (Confirmed): A berth is allotted. The coach and berth number are shown once the chart is prepared.
• RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation): You can board and are guaranteed to travel, usually sharing a side-lower berth until a full berth frees up.
• WL (Waiting List): No seat yet. If the number keeps dropping, confirmation is likely; a GNWL (General Waiting List) clears faster than a PQWL or RLWL.
• Chart Prepared: Roughly 4 hours before departure the reservation chart is finalised. After this point, your status will no longer change online.

• Sleeper (SL) & AC 3-Tier (3A): Berths run in bays of eight. Within each bay the pattern is Lower, Middle, Upper, Lower, Middle, Upper — then a side aisle with a Side Lower and Side Upper. So seat 42 works out to a Side Upper berth.
• AC 2-Tier (2A): Bays of six — Lower, Upper, Lower, Upper, plus Side Lower and Side Upper. Wider berths and curtains make this a popular overnight choice.
• AC First Class (1A): Private lockable cabins (coupes for two, cabins for four) with Lower and Upper berths only. No side berths.
• Second Sitting (2S) / Chair Car (CC): Numbered seats arranged as window, middle and aisle rather than sleeping berths.

Tatkal booking tips & tricks

Tatkal is the emergency quota that opens one day before the journey (excluding the boarding day). Confirmed Tatkal tickets are gold during festivals and peak season, but they sell out in seconds. A few practical tips:

• Tatkal booking opens at 10:00 AM for AC classes and 11:00 AM for non-AC (Sleeper). Be logged in and ready two minutes early.
• Pre-fill and save your passenger details in a master list so you aren't typing under pressure.
• Keep payment ready via a fast UPI or saved card; the first successful payment usually wins the seat.
• Have a backup train in mind. If your first choice shows a long waitlist, pivot instantly to the alternative.
• Remember Tatkal tickets carry an extra charge and generally cannot be cancelled for a refund unless the train is delayed by more than three hours or cancelled.

Reading the live station board

The live station board is the digital version of the big departures display you see on a platform. On Ekzora, enter a station name or code (like NDLS for New Delhi) to see the trains arriving and departing soon, complete with scheduled time, platform number and delay status. It's the quickest way to plan a platform change, receive a relative, or decide which train to catch for a short-notice trip.

Key Indian Railways rules every traveller should know

• Carry valid ID: For reserved travel, at least one passenger must carry an original government photo ID (Aadhaar, passport, voter card, driving licence or PAN).
• Boarding window: You may board at your booked boarding station; the TTE can allot a no-show berth after two stops or 30 minutes.
• Night hours: Middle berths can be folded down for sleeping only between 10 PM and 6 AM, so co-passengers can use the lower berth as a seat during the day.
• Luggage: Each class has a free luggage allowance; oversized or excess baggage should be booked in the luggage van.
